Description
Terracotta altar (Arula)
Notes
fragment of terracotta altar Material: Terracotta; Fabric: Pinkish clay (10 YR 8/3), with some large brown inclusions Measurements: Maximum preserved dimensions: base 9 x 10.9 cm; height 8 cm Description: The object appears to have once conformed to a roughly square box shape, with a flat base and walls extending upward, though the fragment preserves only two walls. The base is framed by irregularly spaced decorative bands of varying thickness (.2- .4 cm). The two remaining walls of the object are roughly 2 cm thick, with a hollowed interior. Condition: Preserves roughly 50% of the once square base, forming a triangular fragment with only one corner of walls meeting preserved. The profile is not preserved and the edges are broken irregularly. Bibliography: Meijden 1993, Beilage 3 E2 for form, also pp. 4-9
