After further study and identification of this area as a quarry, it appears that this is one of a series of cuts into the bedrock associated with quarry machinery. This one, specifically, may have accommodated one of the posts to which cranes’ tie-rods were tied
SU18 is a cut in the bedrock filled only by SU17. It is possibly the very bottom of a cut for a cremation burial, the majority of which was in the soil above and was removed by machine. It is possible that there are two oval cuts overlapping. The fill (SU17) was the same throughout, but there was a cluster of stones in the smaller oval. The cut sides are also more vertical in this area.
