Probably a layer of road preparation for a phase of the north-south road post-dating SU 2099= SU 2181, possibly analogous to the layer of stones found on top of glareate road 2093. In the sondage, this layer did not extend the full width of the road, but it is possible that the preparation is more fully preserved in the south. Alternatively, this layer may have been truncated in its western limit by a cut or an erosion, similar to SU 2075 = SU2082 that covered SU 2093 (and was eroded by SU 2092).
