The SU is a pit of unknown function. It is part of three circular cuts next to each other. We are unable to determinate the sequence of the cuts. We didn't see the compact bottom on the eastern part of the wall. Instead, we saw loose, dark soil, which was documented as a separate fill (SU 2311) within cut SU 2298. Upon excavation, it seemed that the new layer actually extended into the sides of the cut. As this seemed to indicate we had over-excavated, we halted and documented the bottom of cut SU 2298 at the present state. Therefore SU 2311 is beneath SU 2253. The cut partially destroyed floor SU 2253. During post-excavation study, this feature was reinterpreted as a spoliation event which may date as late as the 400s CE.
