During post-excavation study, this feature was reinterpreted as a leveling fill suggesting activity and likely some type of flooring at the southern limit of the Phase 1B building.

2011-07-29 Jackson Vaughn

This was a very sterile layer, consisting of very frequent inclusions of red tufo throughout. Based on the construction frequencies of the walls that delimit Space 8 (SU 2276, 2278, and 2306) and cut this layer, it seems to predate the latest, 2nd c. BCE phase of the house. This layer, based on the visible inclusions, may be analogous/equivalent to the layer immediately to the west of wall 2276 (in Space 7), which has yet to be documented or excavated. Interpretation of the nature of this layer remains difficult, but it is likely to be accumulation.
