Based on the types of material in the deposit (namely rim and base fragments and finer-ware vessels) it seems unliekly this was a hearth. Instead, it is possible that this is a destruction horizon related to a pre-house phase of occupation. Why exactly this pocket of stratigraphy survives is unclear.
