Fairly lose fill of a cut with debatable function. The soil is rich with charcoal and ashy pockets, as well as some visibly burnt ceramics and animal bone. This evidence of burning suggests that the function of the hole is either a place for dumping burnt material, or a fire pit. Remnants of cooking stands and the clearly defined ash might indicate in-situ utilization more so than dumping. The few tiny pieces of wattle and daub found could be related to nearby feature 2851.
