Observations and Descriptions

Observations
Excavated on 6/27 by pickaxe, clear and sunny. No sketch for this SU.
Position
Within Room G2, west of NS road North of Room 1 and the via Gabina
Shape
Rectangular

Layers

Surface
Layer includes a line of rubble as the Southern limit. North of the rubble has many pebbles, as well as along the western limit.
Inclusion Observations
On the surface there are rocky features.in the NW comer and threshold between rooms G2 and G3. There are many surface inclusions in Room G3. The layer contained rocky inclusions throughout, but ended on a darker layer of soft, silty soil.
Thickness Observations
No thickness observations were recorded at the time of excavation.

Layer of accumulation in the northern half of Room G2 and the remainder of Room G3, bounded on the left by wall 6014. There is no distinction between the two Rooms, indicating that the layer was deposited after the spaces went out of use. Includes the pile of rubble and tile in the south. The rubble was vaguely linear but not as well constructed as the other small linear features in the area and was removed with the soil in the SU. The deposit is possibly associated with the linear features, especially 6014 and the small amount of ceramics supports the hypothesis of the use of these spaces delineated by the small walls for small-scale agriculture or viticulture.

Dates and Phasing

Approximate Date of Layer

Date of Layer Observations
No diagnostic from latest wares in SU. One wall sherd of African red slip comes from C production, which sets a terminus post quem of 200 AD. No later productions present in SU. 500 AD is arbitrary limit to SU date--may go later; need to check sequence.
