The exterior surfaces and the bottom of the sarcophagus appear to have been worked less carefully than the vertical faces on the interior, suggesting that the SU may have been fully carved only after having been deposited within cut 108. The presence of a thin layer of soil (SU 2090) similar to the surrounding fill (SU 2085) and tufo fragments under the sarcophagus may indicate that the SU was initially deposited on wooden or other supports that subsequently deteriorated
