Structure Description
Interpretation could although the SU sat within a cut, the boundary of the burning was very sharply defined. Possibly the limits of the fireplace was originally defined by other objects (stone, tiles, etc), now missing.

Deposit appeared to comprise burnt adobe before excavation began. During excavation it became apparent that the soil matrix comprised concotta, essentially baked soil. Parts of it were intensely red. A tufo slab with uneven edges was situated in the center of the SU. It had a good number of hair line fractures which may have been caused by intense heat. A black halo around the tufo slab suggests it was burnt in situ. After the removal of the slab, another in a similar position was found beneath it in SU 2296. SU 2284 was found to sit within a shallow, cut and together with 2296 appears to have functioned as insulation to a fireplace, represented by its upper surface.
