The SU is a large, natural accumulation layer covering the north-south wall on the eastern edge of Area C (SU 2290, SU 2291, SU 2292). The SU covers layers that possibly predate the 2nd c. BCE house. The SU has two tufo clusters, marked on the transparency, whose interpretation are currently uncertain. The layer also covers SU 2284, a potential hearth. The transparencies were redone to include the tufo clusters. Our goal with SU 2281 was to remove all post-abandonment accumulation in the area. We likely over-excavated in parts when we had difficultly identifying the next surface. This may account for the high concentration of archaic pottery in SU 2281.
