The layer was excavated because wall 2292 to the east dates to the Republican period, so the cut in the Archaic floor surface to the west was hypothesized to also possibly be from that much later period. However, later pottery such as Black Gloss was found, so excavation was halted for the time being, as the SU could date earlier than wall 2292. During post-excavation study, this feature was reinterpreted as a possible leveling deposit that might be associated with the construction of the Area C road to the east.
