The compact deposit is likely related to floor leveling for a later surface in the courtyard of the house. The surface was highly irregular and it is possibly that along the E. limit we dug through the interface between this and earlier deposits (hence the burnt adobe that was appearing along this limit). During post-excavation study, this feature was reinterpreted as a potentially early leveling fill regularizing the topography of the central area of Space 1A-7 and leading into Space 1A-1.
