This cut is confusing and difficult to interpret. The top of the cut indicates that this was originally a double posthole, whose western limits cut into SU 3592 (interpreted as the floor of the hut surface). However, after removal of two layers of fill (3571 and 3578), it became clear that there were two separate post holes, which were then excavated separately (as cut 3602 and and 3588). It seems that the initially, this cut was a double post hole, which possibly extended further west (and this original limit remains invisible and to be excavated in the 2015 season), and at some later point a wall was created in the middle of the cut to create two circular post holes. This was done by placing fragments of tufo and ceramic in between them. At this point, both holes may have been used for posts, but then at some later date, once the posts were removed, and filled up with soil, a shallow cut was made into the area (3597), and the area used as a midden. Evidence from the environmental lab points to a high quantity of burned seeds.
