This pier seems to mirror a similar pier (SU 5442)to the West. Both appear to flank a threshold leading into Space 10 (a monumental ramp). The pier is situated at the southern end of SU 5437 and appears to constitute its limit. It is unclear as to what would have been above this pier, but there are fallen column drums in the area which could have been on the top of the pier. The top of the pier may have degraded or it may have been intentionally cut to give the pier a more pyramidal look. There are other piers in the area which support this claim. In the early phases of this area, then, the pier may have been part of a monumental entrance way.
