A relatively regular cut east of wall 6033 through a compact surface (6074) that filled a previous large cut (6060). Given its position, depth, and alignment, this cut appears to have been related to the construction of wall 6033, either contra terra (as would seem likely from the appearance of the eastern face of the base of the wall) or as a proper foundation trench. Toward the northern limit of wall 6033, for whatever reason, no trench seems to have been necessary, and the wall was built directly at the level of the earlier basalt pavement. One difficulty with this interpretation is that the fill of the cut is rather wide and loose, and one would normally expect the foundation of the wall to fill more or less the entirety of the cut. But this is not an insurmountable interpretive obstacle, and otherwise the presence of this cut is difficult to explain.
