SU 8412 is a series of concrete walls forming a rectangle around the center of Room I-17. Its purpose was clearly to delimit covered space (the mosiac sections along each side) from uncovered space inside 8412. It remains unclear what would have filled this space, and therefore how we might interpret the room. Within the rectangle formed by 8412 there is a calcareous deposit and several cuts which appear to have been related to drainage or water, so it seems likely that some sort of basin, fountain, or impluvium occupied this space (perhaps suggesting that the room might be interpreted as an 'atrium'). On the other hand, the thickness of wall 8412 suggests that it was structural, and it (or pillars/columns/posts associated with it) may have served primarily to hold up the roof, in which case Room I-17 might more properly be described as a courtyard or even 'peristyle'. Some interesting depressions and cut features in the wall might provide additional data, but could not be explored before the end of the season in 2018. Further excavation around 8412 is needed to clarify the situation.
