This represents the floor of the central open courtyard space of lower terrace of the complex. Although at first glance this paving seemed significantly different than the tufo paving immediately to the south in the rest of the courtyard and the monumental ramp (5321) , it is possible that this is an artificial distinction and that the perceived difference is due to circumstances of wear, modern excavation, and preservation, rather than to separate original functions, construction techniques, aesthetics, etc. This floor seems to have been laid after the ashlar wall (which it abuts) but before the cocciopesto floors of room 1 and the " via tecta" outside of rooms 3 and 4 (which abuts it). These are all , however, in face with one another. After the reorganization/ abandonment of the first phase, part of the floor in the eastern ala (room 5) was robbed, concrete wall 5343 was built directly on top of this floor and blocks 5330 were laid on top of it.
