SU623 represents the accumulated fill of a very large quarry cut. It was excavated by machine, and stratigraphy was preserved only in sections. The deposit consists mainly of small to large fragments of quarry debris, probably deposited here by quarrymen after extraction in this exact area had ceased but remined nearby. Above this is a less rocky layer of soil which may have accumulated naturally after all activity had ceased. Only a small amount of pottery was kept from the very bottom of the layer, in an attempt to date the abandonment of the quarry activities.
