SU 8228 forms a step allowing access between the 'porch/sidewalk' SU 8229 and the interior of Room I5 in the Area I structure. This was the main entrance to this structure (at least in its first, late Republican/imperial phase) from the road. The surface SU 8229 that covers the southern limit of this step may represent a later surface, suggesting that the threshold remained in use over a long period. The flat blocks on either side of the step (the western included in the SU, the eastern perhaps one that is not in situ and included as an inclusion in SU 8229) and the lack of wall plaster on 8168 and 8039 in small rectangles just above these perhaps suggest that the step may once have been set into a tufo slab pavement of some kind.
