Cut filled by quarry debris. The cut was probably originally made (at least in part) for the quarrying of the bedrock now sitting under the debris (SU1403). The cut appears to follow the orientation of the nearby road, which was therefore probably in use at that time. The bottom of the cut is in the bedrock and appears in places to have been cut for the extraction of stone, though no obvious tool marks are apparent. SU 1409 cut through, on the east and west, soil layers which appear to have been naturally deposited after the abandonment of the area; quarry operations may have obliterated any evidence of earlier activity in this area.
