SU 5159 is the eastern wall of a monumental staircase providing access between a lower terrace (area F south) and a higher terrace (Area F North and F 2012). The wall also serves as the western limit of the structure limited to the south by 5006/07, to the east by 5008, and to the north by 5009. A similar wall is only very badly preserved on the western side of the stairs, robbed out by the action of cut 5165. The large, well-cut ashlars to the south served to strengthen the corner with 5006 and, perhaps, add to the monumental appearance. The wall on the opposite side of terrace wall 5006/07 is similarly constructed of both ashlars and smaller blocks of various shapes. The small square and circular holes in this wall may have been for gate or door elements-in fact a stair with small square cuts, probably for a door, lies just to the south. The column base at the northern limit of the wall attests to the significance of this area, even if its exact function is not yet understood. This wall continues to the south past 5006, at a lower height, as SU 5465.
