This appears to be a possible foundation trench. We defined the bottom cut based on the fact that the cuts fill's inclusions began to go under the abutting south and east walls. The cut appears strange because it does not go down to bedrock (as we would expect in a foundation trench) but is simply more compacted soil. Thus the abutting east wall (SU5439) sitting on soil and not bedrock. There is also a worked stone in the corner under wall 5439 and the purpose of this stone is unclear at this time. The cut appears to be truncated by the modem cement structure put in place by the Soprintendenza during a previous excavation. This hinders our interpretation because any remaining parts of the foundation trench next to wall 5439 are no longer visible.
This is a possible foundation trench.
