These tiles, together with the associated concrete superstructure (SU 5745), seem to represent a feature used for some kind of burning activity. The tiles show evidence of sooting and are discolored black and red. Thus it was possibly an oven, hearth, or kiln. Given that it has been constructed on top of the original floor surfaces of the secondary courtyard, it must belong to the second phase of the middle terrace (along with the associated walls in opus mixtum 5575 and 5744 and the beaten tufo floor 5576), when the space is being reorganized and possibly transitioning from formal public to makeshift private uses (e.g. squatting, production, storage).
