SU 8209 served as a buttress for Room I-17. It appears to be associated with a secondary phase of the building as its wall construction consists of relatively irregular stones compared to the petit appareil of 8203 and other walls nearby. The later construction of this feature is further justified by the presence of wall signinum 8416 on the northern face of wall 8203 between it and 8209; that is, at one point, the southern limit of Room I-17 was apsidal wall 8203, faced with signinum. It seems likely that this buttress functioned as a platform for vaulting over the apse of room I-17 in this second phase.
Probably a floor surface. Exposed by the bulldozer at the beginning of the 2017 season. Probably truncated in antiquity as part of spoliation of into site. To be documented in full in future seasons.
