After completing the excavation of the successive fills of this linear cut, it is most probable that this is not a foundation trench (cf. SU535 and SU562). Rather, it may have been a drainage channel, certainly assocated with cut SU555 to the west. The stratigraphic relationship of this cut to most of the surrounding cuts is difficult to determine with certitude, since the fills were all fairly uniform. It is reasonably certain, however, that this channel was truncated at its east limit by (at least) the latest phase of the N-S road (see photos 1366-67), which it meets at a right angle. See also interpretation for SU555.
