Interpretations

Interpretations

This deposit is the accumulation (whether natural or anthropic) of material following the post-abandonment of the building. The high quantity of tiles found in this layer (not in situ) suggest all of the material was churned up following the decay of the structure.

Bulk Finds
Class Count Weight (kg) Details
Bone 0.23
CBM 229.92 Tiles weighed and dumped as of July 11.
Iron 11 0.414 9 nails, 1 bent stake, 1 possible tool.
Marble 8 2.9 One fragment alabaster, also includes white marbles and pavonazzo.
Mosaic Tile 25.72 Mixed gray/black and white, with two chunks of mortar preserving some tesserae.
Plaster 995 36.92 10.93 kg of white hydraulic or unfaced plaster reburied to gain space. 6 cassetta of plaster fragments, including ceiling fragments with cane impressions, as well as molded fragments, fargments of garden images, red, yellow, green, orange, striped, and multicolor pieces. Many fragments appear to come from same wall scheme. Should be further studied. Counts and weights may be off due to a malfunctioning scale and processing occurring across multiple days.
Stamped Tile 6 3.52 circle stamp. Decision partway through season to change stamped tile from special find to bulk find means that some stamped tile from this SU are in materials cassetta and others have been entered and stored as special finds.
